Nevada
Wen Hui Tan | Coronado High School | Henderson, NV

"Nuclear Proliferation: Two Superpowers and Iraq"
Coordinator: Ms. Shaw Yun Chiu

NV Winner: Wen Hui Tan

Wen Hui is an eclectic multitasker: She fills in her free hours with volunteering in the children’s department of a local library and by amusing herself with various hobbies: graphic design, eating foreign cuisine, Chemistry, and traveling. Being a victim of continual mispronunciation (Wun-Hway is how her name is pronounced) has fueled a passion for languages from Spanish to Mandarin. She has also retained her childhood fascination for dinosaurs and ancient civilizations and can be seen every weekend watching cartoons with her hero, her little brother. With a myriad of interests, she is hoping that her education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will train her well for her future careers as a linguist/pediatric surgeon/paleontologist. Attending the Awards Week will be her third time in Washington D.C. (the first for National Spelling Bee, the second as a Girls Nation delegate). Her frequent visits to Washington DC is prompting her to wonder if perhaps her true calling is political science.

"Indispensable Communication"
Coordinator: Mr. John P Putnam

Hollie Putnam first became interested in peacemaking when she joined the speech and debate team at Albuquerque Academy in her eighth grade year. She has come to believe that open and constant dialogue about human rights is essential to ensure the success and support of a policy. As she graduates from high school, she is preparing to study international relations with a focus on human rights. In addition to human rights, she plans to study studio art. She feels that people who face linguistic barriers can often find common ground in an image.
