Oklahoma
Mr. Mark Donaldson

"Elements of Democratization in Poland and Pakistan"

Mark is a senior at Holland Hall Upper School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He plans to attend Amherst College in the fall and study political science and philosophy. He is the editor of the student paper at Holland Hall and a member of the four-time state-champion academic bowl team. He also plays guitar and enjoys photography. Mark volunteers with the Tulsa Youth Court program, and works in the computer lab for his synagogue's religious school on Sundays. Last summer, Mark took a four-week trip to Europe, and he spent four previous summers attending the Duke TIP program.

Mr. Eugene Nho

"Four Elements of Successful Democratization"

Eugene is a junior at South Eugene High School in Eugene, Oregon. He came to the U.S. from Korea in September 2004. In Korea he attended Korean Minjok Leadership Academy where he was the editor-in-chief of the award-winning school newspaper and was captain of the Taekwondo team. Eugene won several state-level medals in Taekwondo and Inline. He played drums in a rock band and traditional drums in the Korean Traditional Percussion Band. In 2003, Eugene won consecutive championships in the national Quiz Champion tournament. In May 2004, he represented Korea in the International Philosophy Olympiad. In Eugene, OR he founded the Taekwondo Club and has been teaching Taekwondo to students and teachers. He is editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and enjoys playing soccer and debating in school teams. He teaches writing at Eugene Korean School and is a Telluride Association Summer Program finalist. Eugene plans to go to a college after graduating in 2006.

Mr. Lee Huttner

"India and Tibet: Allies in an International Struggle"

Lee is a junior at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He plans to attend a university after graduating next year and to study anthropology, biology, and religious studies. Lee is president of the Key Club and is a member of the National Honor Society, Students for a Free Tibet, the Sierra Club, and the National Resources Defense Council. Lee is also a teen docent at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He has been accepted into the 2004 and 2005 editions of Who's Who Among American High School Students. Lee has received a first-place award from the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences competition and a second-place award from the Pittsburgh Regional Science Fair. He has won the Davidson Fellowship and a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Pittsburgh School Board. Lee attends the Young Writers Institute and has won several awards for his writing, including one from DharmaCrafts and from the Live Poets Society. Lee has been awarded an Allegheny County Council Proclamation for his poetry.

Luis is from Carolina, Puerto Rico. He has been involved in many high school activities including community service, Class Officer, Student Council, the choir, and the Math Club. After graduating from Academia del Perpetuo Socorro, in San Juan, PR, Luis will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is not sure what course of study he will pursue, but he will most likely be an engineering or management major. Among the recognitions Luis has received are National Hispanic Scholar and being a finalist in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Elizabeth lives with her mother in Providence, Rhode Island. She is a junior at St. Mary Academy - Bay View, a Catholic all-girls preparatory school. She is co-editor of Bay View's newspaper and vice president of their literary magazine. She is a member of the National Honor Society. This year she was on the state leadership for the Rhode Island Model Legislature. She also is a certificate student in photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. Elizabeth loves history, politics, writing, music, photography, and cats. She likes to pretend she is a poet and loves nothing more than afternoon outings with her manual SLR. After she finishes high school next year, she plans to attend college and study history.

Becca lives in Columbia, South Carolina. She is a senior at Irmo High School and in the fall she will attend the Honors Program at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC. At this point her plan is to major in business with a focus in marketing. Dancing and singing are two of her favorite activities. This year Becca served as the captain of the dance team/color guard (Hi-Steppers) with her high school marching band. She is also a member of her dance studio's jazz team, and she is currently in a production of A Chorus Line at her community's Workshop Theatre. In addition, she is a member of the parish choir at her church. Becca is graduating in the top ten percent of her class as a Distinguished Honor Graduate, a member of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club.

Chris lives in Rapid City, South Dakota and attends St. Thomas More High School. When he graduates at the end of this year he plans to go to college somewhere in South Dakota. Chris is involved with his local church and helps with the confirmation class every week. He is also involved with the Boy Scouts of America and has received the Eagle Scout Award, which is the highest award one can achieve. He enjoys watching sports on TV, hiking and camping.

Ms. Stephanie Hull

"Crossing the Ice to Democracy: Togo and South Korea"

Stephanie is currently a junior at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tennessee. She runs track and cross-country for her school and has raced in the State Cross Country Championships for the past two years. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing the piano and ultimate Frisbee with friends. On Sundays, she and her sister teach a class of first-graders at their church. In addition, Stephanie is a member of several school organizations such as National Honor Society, Interact, and Habitat for Humanity. She participates on the school math team, and is state president of Mu Alpha Theta. Last summer she went abroad with the American Field Service to Costa Rica, and this summer she will represent Ravenwood at Volunteer Girls State. After graduating in 2006, Stephanie plans to attend college, possibly majoring in engineering.

Samuel was born in Red Bank, New Jersey. Currently he is a junior at Coppell High School in Coppell, Texas. He is a squad leader in the award winning marching band, a state qualifier in Business Professionals of America, member of the National Junior Classical League, graduate of Coppell Youth Leadership, and a district winner in UIL Social Studies. He has been active in school government as the class vice president and is a National Honor Society officer as well. In addition, he is active in his church where he teaches Vacation Bible School in the summer, helps lead the AWANA program and volunteers at the church's children's library. He is also a member of American Mensa, and enjoys playing soccer, tennis, French horn and piano in his free time.

Dee Dee is a walking quagmire! She studies hard and then hits the gym. As much as she loves pink, she waits all year for NCAA March Madness. When she is not on the tennis court, she is probably at the mall with her dog Elle, a 3lb Yorkie. Dee Dee's biggest passion in life is service. From teaching tennis to underprivileged kids to spending three weeks in the Philippines with Operation Smile to teaching computer skills at a retirement center. Dee Dee is very proud to be a 2005 Coca-Cola Scholar. Next year she will play tennis at Utah State University where she plans on majoring in broadcast journalism.

Seth is a junior at Middlebury Union High School in Vermont, where he is an avid participant in Model United Nations. His manifold interests include gaming, military tactics, science, philosophy, Latin, reading and writing. Seth has completed two unpublished short novels, and was accepted to the New England Young Writer's Conference in 2005. Ms. Jessica Kabaz-Gomez

Jessica is a senior at Oakton High School in Fairfax, Virginia. She serves as the president of Oakton High School's national ranking Rocketry Club and is a distinguished member of Oakton's Model United Nations. As part of the National Honor Society she carries a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. When not in school, Jessica volunteers through her local Key Club chapter and is a babysitter. Jessica volunteered as an English teacher for adults in Spain and is organizing a courtyard renovation project at Oakton High School. She also works as a clerical administrative assistant at Abbtech Staffing Services. As part of the International Poets Society she dedicates time to writing poetry. In September, Jessica will attend the College of William & Mary to focus her studies on public policy and work toward a degree in law.

Wendy is a senior at Lindbergh High School in Renton, Washington. Prior to her moving to the Seattle metropolitan area, she attended Kennewick High School in Kennewick, Washington. Throughout high school, she has been an active member in her school's Environmental Club and a tutor for the King County Library System. She is a talented artist and aspires to be a cinematographer or a screenwriter one day as a side project. Her interests include art, music, politics, and filmmaking. Next fall, she will attend Wellesley College and major in either economics or political science with a double minor in Chinese and filmmaking. After she graduates, she plans to continue her education and eventually get an MBA in international business.

Victor lives in Wheeling, West Virginia and is a junior at the Linsly School. He is involved in many volunteer activities including the Wheeling Symphony, the Ohio Valley Medical Center, and the Wheeling Soup Kitchen. Victor received a 2005 volunteerism award offered by the Junior League of Wheeling for service to the community. Currently Victor is president of his youth group in the Western Pennsylvania Region and next year he will be president of the entire Midwest Region. Victor's academic achievements include being a representative at WV Boys State this summer, first-place in state for the Level Four National French Exam in 2005, and sixth-place in the State Forensics Tournament in Humorous Interpretation. His future plans include attending college to study foreign languages, business, and law. Victor also hopes to gain experience and a broader understanding of the world through study abroad programs.

Molly lives in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and will attend Marquette University this fall. She intends to major in athletic training, physical therapy and Spanish. She is volunteers at a local hospital and participates in Student Council, tutoring and mentoring programs, National and Spanish Honor Societies, Knowledge Masters, Rube Goldberg, and Math Team. Molly enjoys writing for the school newspaper. She is an officer in Rotary Interact and a board member of Safe Rides. She loves tennis and was co-captain of the tennis team, a four-year varsity letter winner, and achieved all-conference second team. Molly placed second at state in the forensics prose competition and won the scholarship competition award in the College of Health Sciences Athletic Training at Marquette as an entering freshman. She is a Midwest regional winner of the Arthur Ashe essay contest and received a second place scholarship for the Stein Roe Young Investors essay contest.

In 2006, Nicole will attend the University of Oklahoma where she plans to study Spanish and nutritional sciences. She has been recognized as a National Merit Finalist. Some of her favorite hobbies include clogging, climbing, and enjoying nature.

Alexis relocated to Heidelberg, Germany in 2004 and mentors youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math careers through a Girl Scouting program she created called Discovering Conservation. Alexis is an honor student at Heidelberg American High School and is involved in Model United Nations, Future Business Leaders of America, and Student Council. She is an avid rower, enjoys volleyball, and is a member of the National, Science, History and French Honor Societies. Alexis has received the National Wildlife Federation's National Conservation Achievement Award, Ethyl G. Harvey President's Award, Action For Nature Eco-Hero Award, Prudential Spirit of Community, International Leadership Award, and the James Monroe Award. Alexis has been published on various websites and in TTG Magazine. She is a former member of the Board of the Girl Scout Council of the Nations Capital and is currently a member of the Girl Scouts Overseas Board and a National Delegate for Girl Scouting.
