Maine
Ms. Caitlin Katsiaficas
"Transitions to Democracy: What a Nation Needs to be Successful"
Portland High School

In high school, Caitlin was active on the Civil Rights Team and Executive Board. For three years she has participated in the International Club, where she served as co-secretary and co-president. Caitlin revived the Model United Nations Program at her school. As secretary of the Portland Youth Advisory Council, Caitlin worked to discuss and address youth issues in her community. In the fall she will attend the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University to study International Affairs and foreign languages.

"The Good and Not So Good of the Transition to Democracy in Vietnam and Ukraine"

Perry lives in Fort Washington, Maryland where he attends Oxon Hill High School. He is currently enrolled in the science and technology program. His interests include sports, particularly soccer and basketball. He has played select soccer, boys and girls club soccer, and high school league soccer. Perry has also played boys and girls club basketball where he hopes to be on the high school summer league team. Additionally, he plays the clarinet in his high school band and is in the video club. When Perry completes high school he would like to study astrology and hopes to become an astrologist. His community activities include a watershed clean up in Ackokeck, MD, a member in the St. Ignatius youth group, a certified soccer referee, and a volunteer at a local summer camp. Perry's awards include being a National Junior Honor Society member and an honor roll member.

Ms. Kathleen Moriarty
"Sustainable Change: Democracy and the Fluidity of the State"

Kathleen lives in western Massachusetts and will graduate from Hampshire Regional High School in 2005.  While at Hampshire Regional, she has been a dedicated member of the debate team, an entirely student-run team at the high school.  She has also been a representative on student council, and a member of both the regional and state student advisory councils.  In her four years of high school she has tried to raise awareness about many issues, including helping to organize a Genocide Awareness Week and a fundraiser for girls' schools in Afghanistan. She loves writing, Indian food, current events, and Scottish television shows.  Kathleen is a National Merit Scholar and hopes to major in linguistics, geography, or English in college.

Brittney is from Bark River, Michigan and graduated from Bark River-Harris High School in May. In high school, Brittney was involved with Key Club, her local community foundation, and her local newspaper. She served as a U.S. Senate Page during the spring of her junior year and has taken four volunteer trips to Honduras. In her free time, Brittney enjoys watching "The Apprentice" and playing golf. Brittney will attend Harvard College in the fall, where she anticipates majoring in social studies, participating in the Institute of Politics, and writing for the Harvard Crimson. After college, Brittney would like to return to the Senate as a legislative or Foreign Relations aide.

Christen currently lives in Elk River, Minnesota with her parents Phil and Bev. She has an older brother Mike whom she considers to be the greatest role model. Christen is very involved at her school and church. As a junior in high school, she is co-captain of the Speech Team, a member of the Drama Club and National Honor Society. Christen is most passionate about music. She has been named all-conference for the past two years and played the flute in the Minnesota All-State Band this past year. Christen volunteers with various youth groups at her church and has also been involved with several service trips to Minneapolis. As of now, she is planning to study music education or performance in college.

Susan Lawrence recently graduated from Madison Central High School in Madison, Mississippi. In the fall she will attend the University of Mississippi's Croft Institute for International Studies to pursue her interest in Peace and Security studies, with a focus in East Asia. She will participate in the National Foreign Language Institute's Intensive Mandarin Chinese program at the University. In High School she was named to Madison Central's Hall of Fame, where she was president of the Beta Club, a four-time Youth Legislator and a Model United Nations Security Council participant, and an elected member of the Student Government Association. She was captain of the Academic Decathlon team and active in the Mississippi Diocese of the Episcopal Church. In her spare time, Susan enjoys reading, painting and working on her scrapbook.

Ashish was born and is currently living in the Midwest, in the college-town of Columbia, Missouri. The area has a lot to offer someone like Ashish, with interests ranging from global affairs to community involvement. Even though in high school he has been involved in numerous activities, such as National Honor Society, Global Issues and Model United Nations. Within his community Ashish helps out by volunteering at the local hospital and at the food bank. With all of this interaction in his city, he hopes to pursue a career in which he can help the people in the same way he as been; he wants to lend his talents to medicine and become a doctor. After college and medical school, he wants to become involved in the Red Cross or Doctor's Without Borders in order to both help the needy and stay involved in the affairs that have become a passion of his.

Jessica has lived in Omaha, Nebraska, her entire life. She will graduate from Duchesne Academy in May and pursue her interests in political science at American University this coming fall. Because of the inherited love of history from her father, Jessica has been involved in National History Day qualifying for nationals three times. Jessica has volunteered yearly for Special Olympics, and has traveled on school service trips to Detroit and the Dominican Republic. At the state Academic Decathlon contest in February she received ten medals and scored the highest number of points in the state of Nebraska in her division. Jessica is a bibliophile who loves animals.

Brielle lives in Bunkerville, Nevada and enjoys being involved in school and church activities. She plans to become a high school history teacher and yearbook advisor. She is currently the Show Choir manager/technician, Yearbook Editor, and will be the National Honor Society president for the 2005-2006 school year. When she's not at school she loves playing the piano and cello, is addicted to board games and reads voraciously. She has also received The Young Women's Medallion from her church group and works part-time at the Community College as a math tutor.

"Democracy: A Success or Failure?"

Claire lives in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Throughout her community and in her high school, Claire has participated in a number of activities. One of her favorites is testing for water quality as part of a sea grant program run through UNH to ensure safe seafood off the coast of New Hampshire. She also created a project that encompasses the water quality testing and phytoplankton sampling that took first place at the state science fair. This year Claire was inducted into the National Honor Society. She is currently the secretary of her Biotechnology II class, the president of Students Against Destructive Decisions, and the treasurer of the National Honor Society. In the future, she plans to study French, genetics, and microbiology with a major emphasis on cancer research and cellular metabolism.

Joshua resides in Brick, New Jersey. He plans to pursue an undergraduate degree at Columbia University in New York. He volunteered as a receptionist in the triage of Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, New Jersey (445 Hours) where he greeted incoming patients and recorded their information. Joshua also transported patients to the emergency room as well as other sections of the hospital. As the senior volunteer, he trained new volunteers and provided tutoring services to underprivileged students and adults. Joshua's many achievements include: Salutatorian of the graduating class at Christian Brothers Academy, National Merit Scholars Finalist, Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction Award, Association of Indians in America-NJ Chapter Award Recipient, Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Recipient, National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, and a participant in the 2004 NJ Scholars Program at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Yuan is currently a junior at Los Alamos High. Piano, choir, and tennis are a big part of her life. She is junior editor of the school magazine staff, Pegasus, and also a member of the National Honor Society. Besides volunteering at the local bookstore, in her spare time she enjoys reading, writing, and learning new languages. Recently, Yuan received a perfect score on the National Latin Exam. In pursuit of a literary career, she won first place in the Opening Doors essay contest in Alabama, received recognition for Ayn Rand's Anthem essay contest, and published a poem in Teen People.

Carmi is a junior at Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, New York. He is the treasurer of the Future Business Leaders of America Club, a member of the National Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society, and a vice-president of his synagogue youth group. Carmi also plays for his school's varsity baseball team. As a participant in his school's Social Science Research program, he is currently working on a project relating violent conflict and leadership changes. He hopes that his findings will eventually assist in creating an international warning system for violent conflict. He intends to major in political science, and, after earning a law degree, to eventually enter politics.

Irene is a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a founding member of the CGHS Fencing Club and lettered in Varsity Track & Field winning second place All-Conference in the Pole Vault. Her awards include the National Honor Society's 'Model of Exemplary Character', The Crusader's 'Most Dedicated Reporter' and second place team at the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition. One of Irene's passions is sharing her love of classical music by playing the violin in community orchestras and coaching the Raleigh Children's Orchestra. Last spring she won a national scholarship to represent NC as the 2004 Japan-U.S. Senate Exchange Scholar in Nagasaki, Japan. Irene will be an Honors student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing studies in international relations and diplomacy. Go Tar Heels!

Tyler lives in Ellendale, North Dakota. He plans to attend the University of North Dakota and seek a degree in aviation. He is active in his church youth group and a member of Teen Bible Quiz team. Tyler recently participated in a state-level fine arts competition and received five invitations to attend the national competition. In addition to his academics, Tyler works at Char's Food Pride in Ellendale.

In her free time, she likes to go to concerts, cook, and write. She hopes to be a cinematographer and will attend the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television in the fall.
