LouisianaJenny H. Howell The First Steps in the Reconstruction Process Pineville High School Pineville, LA Coordinator: Mrs. Jane Bacot Texada Jenny lives in Pineville, Louisiana and goes to Pineville High School. At school she is involved in many activities such as choir, drama, Anchor Club, and Student Council. Jenny is also very involved in her youth group at Emmanuel Baptist Church. At the Louisiana State Literary Rally Jenny place third in English I and II and she has also been invited to participate in Girl's State this summer. She enters many piano competitions, and last year she was named Outstanding Musician at the LMTA District Rally. After high school she plans to attend college, major in English and study education. Her goal is to become either a high school teacher or a college professor. [ Back to top ] Cara is a junior at Saint Dominic Regional High School in Auburn, Maine, where she has lived all her life. She is an active member of the Student Senate, Drama Club, Music Ministry, and is the president of her school's National Honor Society. Outside of school Cara has passionately danced ballet for eleven years and played her flute since the fourth grade. She has an ear for music, from Belle and Sebastian to U2 to Mozart to the fabulous local band that is Short of April. She won her first essay contest, which was sponsored by her local Knights of Columbus chapter, in the eighth grade. Cara plans on going to college to pursue studying every aspect of life she can, except for calculus. After that, who knows? [ Back to top ] Ian is a senior at Walter Johnson High School, where he is involved in the National Honor Society and a science tutor club. In September he will attend Tufts University where he may study biology and international relations. Over the summer he is going to tour England with a friend and work as an intern at the National Institutes of Health. In his spare time, Ian plays soccer, enjoys paintballing, and is an avid movie fan. [ Back to top ] Sung attends a private high school in Northfield, Massachusettes. He is planning to major in international relations or international economy in college. Sung is currently the president of his high school's UNICEF fundraising campaign and Korean traditional instruments group, which performs to raise charity money for orphans. He is a senior member of Model UN in which he has participated for five years. Sung has also been involved in Amnesty International. [ Back to top ] Nicole lives in Troy, Michigan. She plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall. She has played on the varsity field hockey team at Detroit Country Day School since her sophomore year. In addition, Nicole has also been a staff writer for her school newspaper for four years and a features columnist during her senior year. Nicole has been involved with the Futures National Olympic Development program. Currently she works as a lifeguard at her community center. [ Back to top ] Presently, Anna attends Edina High School in Minnesota and will graduate in June. In high school she was the group leader for Students For a Free Tibet and Amnesty International. She volunteers with Common Bond Communities' tutoring program and has worked with the Twin Cities Youth Empowerment Council. Last summer Anna interned with Amnesty International USA in New York. In order to continue to work with a human rights organization she will be interning with the Center For Victims of Torture this spring. Anna has received both the Rose Rees Peace Award and Soroptimist International's Violet Richardson Award. In her spare time, she enjoys playing bass drum for her school's marching band and rollerblading. Next year Anna will attend American University in Washington, DC where she plans to major in international relations with an emphasis on peace and conflict studies. [ Back to top ] Marielle lives in Madison, Mississippi. After Marielle graduates from Madison Central High School she plans to attend Union University and major in international business. Activities that she has been involved with include: the YMCA Youth Legislature, Mississippi Model Security Council, Government Club, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Wednesday Morning Bible Study, Academic Competition Varsity team, and the newspaper staff. Marielle serves as the political commentary editor for the newspaper and she has won a Mississippi Press Association honorable mention for commentary writing. Marielle is also a Chamber of Commerce Junior Ambassador. She remained on the honor roll throughout high school and has won awards for the highest average in both algebra and art history. [ Back to top ] Ashley is a junior at Notre Dame de Sion in Kansas City, Missouri. Her experiences with people and her education have led Ashley to realize that she has a passion for helping people. Her intense love for science has driven her to want to become a doctor with an emphasis on genetics. Specifically, Ashley would like to focus on cancer research. She is involved in many community groups and clubs that are for the betterment of society. Ashley is the state representative for Code Pink Women for Peace and has staged vigils and protests in the local area. Ashley is also president of the Diversity Club, which tries to make diversity an important issue in her school. In addition, Ashley has worked for Habitat for Humanity in Omaha, Nebraska, building houses for needy families. [ Back to top ] Daniel lives in Lewiston, Montana. After high school he plans to attend the University of Montana and double major in theatre and an as-of-yet undetermined second major. He is the student body president at Fergus High school as well as the Montana District 4 president. Daniel is actively involved in Key Club, National Honor Society, and the Boys and Girls Club. He is also involved with tennis, speech and drama, Ski Club, Band, and Jazz Band. Daniel is a 5th year Kiwanis Award Winner, maintains a 3.967 GPA and is ranked 7th in his class of 113. In his spare time Daniel enjoys snowboarding, playing tennis, curing diseases, and playing the bass guitar. [ Back to top ] Joy currently resides in Alliance, Nebraska, a small town in the western end of the state. This past year she has enjoyed serving her school as senior class president, student council vice-president, and Tri- M Music Honor Society treasurer. Joy has also been active as a member of the National Honor Society and Academic Decathlon. One of her passions in life is music, and she has enjoyed involvement in her school's honor concert choir and her church's praise and worship team. Her favorite classes in school have been AP English and Spanish. Last summer, she enjoyed participating in Cornhusker Girls State and the Rotary-sponsored camp, RYLA. This coming August, she will be moving to Northern Ireland to do youth missionary work for one year with the international organization, Youth for Christ. When she returns from Northern Ireland, she plans to further her education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. [ Back to top ] Erik is a junior in the International Baccalaureate Program at Valley High school in Las Vegas. Prior to moving to Nevada he attended Millburn High school in New Jersey. Erik is a member of student council, serves on the Southern Nevada Water Authority Youth Advisory Council and writes for the Spanish literary magazine. In addition, he was elected National Honor Society president, has been selected for Boys' State and the Foundation for Teaching Economics leadership program. While in Millburn he was on the Board of Education's Student Liaison Committee. Outside of school, Erik has performed professionally in numerous productions including the Broadway revival of "The King and I" and is an active member of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. In his spare time he enjoys reading, traveling, collecting model trains and aircraft. After college, Erik hopes to pursue a career either as an aerospace design engineer or a naval aviator. [ Back to top ] Shannon is from Phoenix, Arizona. She graduates in June from Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. Shannon will attend Yale University this fall. She is interested in international relations, languages and linguistics. Shannon is particularly interested in volunteerism, both internationally and in the U.S. She is a tri-varsity athlete she rows crew and hopes to do so for Yale. She also plays basketball as a center and has been a soccer goalie since she was seven. Shannon has a lifelong interest in cultural immersion. Shannon feels very lucky to have been able to study abroad in Zaragoza, Spain during her junior year in high school. There, she was able to tutor children in English and travel throughout Spain. The oldest of three children, Shannon adores her two little brothers, one of whom Danny - is multiply handicapped. Danny is Shannon's biggest hero. In her spare time she enjoys reading, writing poetry, and especially travel. [ Back to top ] Edward is a 15-year-old student attending Sayreville War Memorial High School in New Jersey and has a 1600 SAT score. He is going to Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey this fall. Edward is active in chess club, math club, library council, student council, academic competition teams, mock trial, and his school's Talented and Gifted program. He also enjoys reading science fiction, playing tennis, and working with computers. [ Back to top ] Christopher grew up in Eastern Idaho and Northern New Mexico and will be graduating this spring from Los Alamos High School. His favorite subjects are history and physics. He became interested in international politics during his three years as a policy debater. As president of the Debate Club he organized a successful, statewide speech and debate tournament. Christopher enjoys literature with Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy a current favorite novel. As a member of the Environmental Club he participates in skiing and fly fishing activities. Every week for the last three years Chris has worked as a hospital emergency room volunteer where he assists staff and patients. Chris holds a student position at Los Alamos National Laboratory and continues his research in high-energy physics in his spare time. Next fall Chris will be attending the University of California at Santa Cruz as a physics major. [ Back to top ] Vivek is a junior at Herricks High school in New Hyde Park, New York. He is co-editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, and serves on the executive boards of both the Student Government and the World Affairs Club. He is also a member of the varsity basketball team and a trombonist in the jazz band. A three-time national finalist in the National History Day competition, Vivek recently completed a paper entitled, "Fallout From Reykjavik: Reagan's Stand and the Fate of Arms Control," for which he interviewed former Secretary of State George Shultz and former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. Vivek hopes to pursue a career in law or politics upon graduation from college. [ Back to top ] Mary was born in Boston, but her family has lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (home of Krispy Kreme doughnuts) for the past fourteen years, so she considers herself a native Southerner. Although far removed from Fenway Park, she still enjoys cheering for the Red Sox and hopes to attend a college in New England. After college, she wants to serve a stint as a Peace Corps volunteer and later become a high school English teacher. Her interests are reading and writing, and she will be the co-editor in chief of her school newspaper next year. Mary also spends a great deal of time volunteering for the local chapter of the March of Dimes and running cross-country. Politics is one of her favorite subjects, and she looks forward to being a first-time voter in November. [ Back to top ] Amy will graduate from Minot High school in May of 2004. While attending Minot High, she was active in the National Honor Society, Key Club, swim team, volleyball, and was a Student Guide. Amy was also a member of the Spanish Club and served as co-president this school year. She is a member of First Lutheran Church and a three-year member of the United Way Youth Board where she has served as president. Amy enjoys reading, volleyball, working out, and art. One of her art pieces was selected for the North Dakota Traveling Art show in 2003. She was also chosen to participate in an Art Histories Abroad course where she traveled to France, Spain, and Italy during the summer of 2003. Amy plans to attend the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where she will further her education in Spanish.
