Zak lives in Auburn, AL and plans on going to college to study international law. Zak is currently involved in the Alabama YMCA Youth Judicial and Youth Legislature activities. He is also active in community services at the East Alabama Medical Center and the United Way. In 2004 Zak placed second in his district for the "Voice of Democracy" Essay Contest. Zak is ranked first on the Auburn High School varsity tennis team.

Gus lives in Girdwood, Alaska. He plans to leave Alaska and attend college in an area where he can continue to ski. Gus works and volunteers at several organizations including an arts camp, local radio station, and the committee that plans summer events such as the 4th of July fair.

Katherine is a fifteen-year old sophomore at Buena High School, in Sierra Vista, Arizona. She is the president of her sophomore class and a member of Key Club. As a sophomore, Katie was a member of the Buena varsity volleyball team and also played junior varsity soccer. Katie has won first place in the National History Day competition for her county. She has been named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, and honored by the United States Achievement Academy. An honor student at Buena High School, Katie enjoys the sciences, and in the future hopes to pursue a career in genetic engineering. Katie also plans to serve in the Peace Corps.

The Role of Reconciliation in Post-Conflict Resolution: the Need for Acknowledging Human Rights Violations for Lasting Peace to Occur

Annie is a senior at Pulaski Academy, where she is involved in Model UN, Quiz Bowl, and Chess Club. A transplanted Arkansan, she calls both Little Rock and Hinton, West Virginia "home." She treasures an extended family of friends and relatives in the States and abroad. During her high school career, Annie played lead roles in school and church musicals and nurtured a budding love for the stage. She enjoys painting with words, her musings garnering awards in creative writing. Other honors include National Honor Society, First Chair in All-region Choir, National Merit Finalist, Arkansas Governor's School Photo Contest Winner, and President's Student Service Award. She shares a home with her parents and brother, three guinea pigs, the greatest novels of all time, and many fantastical tendencies. This fall, Annie plans to attend Cornell University as one of 60 Dean's Scholars and pursue her interests in languages, religions, and Asian studies.

Successful Post-Conflict Reconstruction Through a Transition to Democracy

Kevin lives in Danville, California, and is currently a sophomore at Monte Vista High School. He is the congress captain of the Speech and Debate team. At this year's California Invitational at UC Berkeley, he placed fifth in student congress. He also competed in international extemporaneous speaking at the California Speech Championship. Kevin's op-ed article appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, and two opinion articles were printed in the Tri-Valley Herald of Pleasanton, California. He published two editorials on the PBS Newshour Extra website. Kevin's fiction story "The Moment of Decision" and book review Our Only May Amelia appeared in Stone Soup magazine. His journalistic work was recognized when he won the 2003 San Ramon Valley Business Education Roundtable Award for Journalism. Also, Kevin was selected to the Study of Exceptional Talent Program at Johns Hopkins for scoring high on the SAT's before turning thirteen.

Justin lives in Steamboat Springs, a small town in northwest Colorado. He is actively involved in Nordic Skiing, playing the piano, competing in Model United Nations, and cross-country running. After high school Justin plans to attend college, possibly outside of Colorado. He hopes to major in international economics and spend at least one year studying abroad.

James lives in Groton, a town located in southeastern Connecticut. Located in Groton is a Navy submarine base where his mother works. One of the consequences of being in a military family is that James has moved around numerous times. After high school, he plans to return to one of the states in which he lived and attend college at Florida State University. He has not decided upon a certain career yet, but it will more than likely involve one or more of his major interests: art, history, and writing. At school, James has participated in various extracurricular activities, such as assisting with the production of the school yearbook, constructing stages for theater productions, and attending meetings of the newly formed political club. Last Election Day, he also assisted the local Democratic Party as a volunteer; he plans to become involved in a similar fashion this year.

Kaitlin is a resident of Chester, Pennsylvania. In the fall she will attend Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut where she plans to be a public policy and law major with a minor in human rights. Throughout high school she was involved in numerous community service activities, among them Habitat for Humanity and elementary school tutoring. Kaitlin was also co-editor-in-chief of the Green Arch, Archmere Academy's school newspaper, as well as a senior mentor to a group of Archmere freshmen.

Gregory is the son of Sabina and Dmitry Goldgof as well as the older brother to Margalit and Ravital. The family resides in Tampa, Florida. Having recently graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Hillsborough High school, he will attend Stanford University this fall. Presently, Greg has received recognition as a National Merit Finalist and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He is president of the Mathematics and Science Honor Societies and vice president of his school's chapter of Amnesty International. Greg has always been deeply concerned with Middle Eastern politics and has led several projects to raise money for the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. At Stanford Greg intends to double major in electrical and bio-molecular engineering, after which he plans to earn a Ph.D. and work at a research laboratory.

Maria is in the eleventh grade at Centennial High School in the heart of Atlanta's suburbs. At school she formed the so-called Gentleman's Society of the Sword, Atlanta's first high School fencing club. She is a member of the Association of Students Active in Politics (ASAP) and the Ad Council, an impromptu organization started to speak out against the war in Iraq. Maria is an Advisory Board member for the public library, and also for the non-profit youth newspaper Vox, for which she writes. As many young Southerners who see the north as an ocean of bright lights and promises, she plans to attend a New England college to study English. And for a young writer, the first-place state award from the U.S. Institute of Peace is exciting and encouraging.

Michael was born in California and moved to Hawaii when he was four. He is currently a senior at Hawaii Baptist Academy and plans to major in civil engineering at the University of Hawaii next fall. Michael aspires to become a pilot and work for a local commercial airline. His hobbies include computer games and movies.

Ciara is a senior at Timberline High School in Boise, Idaho. After graduation, Ciara plans to study biology and English. She would like to pursue careers in either genetic engineering or medicine and continue to publish her written works. She is the editor-in-chief of the TimberLines newspaper, a member of the varsity tennis team, and a National Merit Finalist. In her spare time, Ciara is an outdoor enthusiast and spends time fly-fishing, mountain biking, and white water rafting. In addition, she has been blessed with extensive opportunities for world travel, visiting countries from Mongolia to Peru. Ciara is an active volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise with almost 700 hours of service.

Tyler attends Belleville East High School in Belleville, Illinois. After high school he will attend Valparaiso University to major in actuarial science with a minor in Spanish. Tyler spends most of his time being involved in school and church activities while also teaching piano lessons. He is Student Council president, National Honor Society secretary, and a member of the Spanish and Math Honor Societies. This past year Tyler was a National Merit Finalist and received an Illinois Principal Association Award. Last summer he had the opportunity to travel on a mission trip to South Korea. This journey opened his eyes to the Korean culture and strengthened his interest in foreign affairs. As Tyler travels to Washington for the NPEC Awards Program, he is excited about the possibilities of learning and sharing ideas to establish peace in his country and the world.

Kevin lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana and is a senior at Canterbury High school. He plans to major in physics at Princeton University. Outside of school, Kevin enjoys playing the violin and guitar, running, and volunteering. He performs in his school's orchestra, and this year his quintet received a 1st at state competition. Kevin was captain of his school's cross country and track teams, and was named to the Academic All-State team in cross country. Finally, he has completed approximately 140 hours of community service in high school, and especially enjoys participating in Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Kevin is a member the US National Physics Team, a National Merit Scholarship Recipient, an Elk's National Foundation Most Valuable Student, and a member of the Cum Laude Society.

Matt lives in Akeny, Iowa. He plans to become a psychiatric pharmacist, although he hasn't made a lasting commitment to the profession. In college he will take courses in various areas of study to explore his many interests. In his spare time, Matt enjoys sports, weight training, writing, friends, and reading. He is Catholic and devotes some time each day to his religious studies. He also likes music. Matt just bought the Katy Rose CD, which he enjoys. Matt follows politics – he is a liberal – go John Kerry in November 2004!

Her favorite pastimes are going to the lake to water ski and attending K-State football games. She enjoys reading and writing and also plays the piano and saxophone. In the fall, Amber will attend Kansas State University and major in biology.

Angie lives in Park Hills, Kentucky and attends high school at Notre Dame Academy. After she graduates, Angie's plans include attending college and majoring in either chemistry or biology. Her hope is to one day get a job in a field of research and development, or pursue a career in some other lab-based area of study. The majority of Angie's community activities include volunteering. She loves visiting and helping with the elderly in nursing homes and cooking for a nearby homeless shelter. Angie also participates at her church by serving as a Eucharistic Minister and taking communion to the sick. Most recently Angie was accepted into the Kentucky Governor's School Program. She has also been a winner in the State Foreign Language Festival for Latin.
