Jessica is an eleventh grade honor student at Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana. She is currently a member of the Interact and Spanish clubs, and was a member of Lambda Sigma Chi, a local service sorority, for three years. Active in sports, she is the Co-Captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders and has played Varsity tennis for three years, winning the AAAAA Regionals in doubles her sophomore year. In her spare time, she loves to draw and likes to workout at the local gym. After high school, Jessica plans to major in psychiatry at the University of Texas in Austin. She is a creative, fun-loving young lady who loves listening to music and hanging out with her friends.

David is completing his junior year at Pikesville High School in Maryland. He is President of the Science Club, a member of the It's Academic TV team, the National Honor Society, and the Model United Nations club. David has spent many hours giving volunteer lectures at inner city middle schools in Baltimore, discussing the dangers of drug abuse. This lecture series evolved after David spent a summer at the Maryland Medical Examiner's Office. In addtion to being interested in science and medicine, David enjoys learning about international relations and political science.

Shailesh is a senior at Troy High School. A member of the Troy High School SADD program and local hospital volunteer, Shailesh plans to major in biochemistry and political science at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor when he starts college this fall. In addition to his selection as the Peace Essay Contest winner for Michigan, Shailesh also placed in the top 20 for the National Chemistry Olympiad and took a 1st place medal at the National Science Olympiad. In his spare time he enjoys reading, keeping up with the news, and traveling.


 
Minnesota

"Peacekeeping: Necessary, Multifaceted, Evolving"

Mike lives in Elk River with his parents and younger sister. He will be a senior at Elk River Area High School in the fall of 2002 where he keeps busy with the National Honor Society, Student Council, and Mock Trial Team. He enjoys music and plays first alto saxophone in the top Jazz and concert bands, as well as singing bass in the top choir. Mike serves as a Student Representative to the local School Board. Mike was recently selected to be president of the student service organization Serving Elk River with Volunteer Enthusiasm (SERVE) and enjoys volunteer and social justice work. He is very active with his parish and diocesan youth activities and also participates in the Youth in Theology and Ministry program through St. John's University in Collegeville, MN. On a different note, Mike spent last summer tracking Blanding's turtles, a threatened species, for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. He loves working with people and hopes to pursue a career in a field that will allow him to continue to do so, such as youth ministry, teaching, or politics.

Mark is an 18 year-old graduate of Madison Central High School, in Madison, Mississippi. During high school, he was active in Government Club, Mu Alpha Theta, JCL, and the Academic Competition Team. Mark also has a keen interest in music, and has played piano for thirteen years, serving the past three years as pianist for his high school's jazz ensemble, as well as the concert and marching bands. Mark's favorite musicians are Gustav Mahler and Yes! In the fall he will attend the California Institute of Technology to study physics and economics.

Elizabeth is a graduating senior at Hellgate High School in Missoula, Montana. She currently serves as senior class president and vice president for her school's National Honor Society chapter. In addition, Elizabeth volunteers many hours in her community through the Hellgate High School Key Club. Skilled in singing, drums, piano, and guitar, she performs in a chamber choir group, a wind ensemble, and jazz and pep bands. She also writes her own country music and recently produced her first CD, which was released in December 2001. When not involved in school and community activities, Elizabeth enjoys hiking in the mountains behind her home with parents Lynne and Ray and her older brother Andy. She plans to attend Harvard University in the fall of 2002. Passionate about education, Elizabeth envisions a future career as a college professor.

Ben is graduating from Alliance High School this spring. He is the President of National Honor Society and a National Merit Scholar Finalist. Ben spends his summers at the City of Alliance swimming pool where he is a certified lifeguard. Ben was also captain of the varsity football and basketball teams and is now participating in track and field; currently he high jumps 6 feet 4 inches. He also enjoys fishing and getting to the gym to practice dunking. This fall he will attend the College of Engineering & Technology at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Dan is a 17-year-old student at Pelham High School in Pelham, New Hampshire. He is the treasurer of the National Honor Society and each year he participates in the Academic Decathlon. Dan founded his school's creative writing club, and he is currently the co-editor of Pelham's first literary magazine, Ethereal Patter. Dan likes to play guitar and he develops his own black and white photography. After he graduates next year, he plans on studying creative writing and biology at college.

Madeline learns at home with her three brothers. Her interest in foreign affairs stems from having lived in many cities, both in the U.S. and abroad, including Washington DC, California, Geneva, New Mexico, and New Jersey. In 1997, she won the Grand Prize of the Roswell UFO National Writing Contest, and in 2001, she won the American Museum of Natural History Young Naturalist Award. In her spare time, Madeline does illustrative drawing, acts professionally, works on her Role Playing Game website, tutors Chemistry and English, breeds tropical fish, and rehabilitates neurotic parrots.

"In War and Peace: Debating the Role of the United States in International Peacekeeping"

Lucrece Archuleta Borrego is a senior at Los Alamos High School in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Throughout high school Lucrece was a member of Natural Helpers, a peer-elected counseling group that organizes school activities. She was also active on the debate team as a policy debater, coach, and Treasurer. Lucrece has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity; Americorps as a mentor for disadvantaged, pre-teen girls interested in the arts; and interned at the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, running an art camp and organizing an exhibit. Lucrece received an Americorps Community Service Award and a Santa Fe Community Apprentice stipend for her volunteer service. Lucrece will study International Finance this fall at Babson College outside of Boston, Massachusetts, where she will attend on a Presidential Scholarship, Multicultural Leadership Award, and Higedon Women's Leadership Award. After graduation Lucrece wants to work in investment banking in Latin America before returning to the US to get her MBA and establish the foundations of her corporate empire! Lucrece enjoyes painting, writing, reading, attending great operas and concerts in Santa Fe, playing in the river behind her house, and hanging out with her friends and, mostly, with her Mom.

Peter is a senior at Stuyvesant High School in New York City. In the fall, he will attend the University of Pennsylvania where he intends to study Economics and Mechanical Engineering. Peter is active in Stuyvesant Student Government and currently holds the position of Director of Cultural Diversity. He is a member of the school's Varsity Football and Golf teams and is Co-President of the Ski Club. He is also President of the School's Greek Club and a member of the National Honor Society. Peter likes to travel and play guitar. He is also involved in community service activities. After 9/11 Peter joined the World Trade Center Environmental Coalition working on environmental justice and public health issues.


 
North Carolina

Neha is a junior at W.G. Enloe High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has represented her state twice at the annual U.S. Academic Decathalon. In addition to taking classes at North Carolina State University, she has been awarded scholarships both by the state government to attend a summer ventures program in math and science at the University of North Carolina, and by the International Materials Science Society to attend a workshop at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. An active participant in both her school and local community, she has served as secretary of the Enloe Key Club, which sponsors book collection and reading campaigns for disadvantaged students, and as a youth member of the North Carolina Hindu Society. After graduating from high school, Neha plans to study medicine to continue to fulfill her wish to help those in need.
